Some factors in development of transitory ischemic attack
It is well known that some risk factors lead to cerebrovascular ischemic lesions. It is less known, however, how these risk factors influence the development of transitory ischemic attacks (TIA). During a 3-year period, we examined 51 age- and sex- matched patients hospitalized at the Department of Neurology for other resasons (epilepsy, sciatica, etc.). We assessed the extent to which the factors of elevated blood presssure, increased blood glucose, cardiac conditions, and previous TIA or cerebrovascular ischemic lesions had affected the development of TIA. Also, the effect of elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels on TIA development was examined. The patients suffering from TIA had a considerably higher diastolic pressure, blood glucose and cholesterol levels than those from the control group. Previous cardiac diseases, TIA or ischemic cerebrovascular lesions were more common in patients with TIA than in the control group. Study results pointed to diabetes, elevated blood pressure, previous cardiac diseases, previous TIA or cerebrovascular ischemic lesions as the most important risk factors for the development of TIA.
