Understanding a story through pictures: "Cockatoos" by Quentin Blake
This thesis deals with pupils’ understanding stories through pictures. Two separate groups, one of young EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners and one of young ESL (English as a Second Language) learners combined with native speakers of English watched a slide show of images from Quentin Blake’ s picture book “ Cockatoos” (1995), but without the text. Their task was to try to reconstruct the original story by discussing the visual discourse displayed. The events were recorded and transcribed for the needs of analysis. It has been established that both groups created their own versions of the story. Both versions are very close to the main story line of the original story, in spite of their mutual differences due to the different educational and cultural backgrounds of the two groups.
