Crossing the gap between language and culture. New EFL dimensions in the Croatian context
This paper explores the intersection of language and culture in the EFL classroom, with a particular eye on the situation in Croatia. Following some general considerations relative to teaching culture and language, we examine the guidelines for teaching language and culture proposed by the Croatian Ministry of Education, and try to pinpoint some of the obvious weaknesses in this programme. We observe that there is a need to integrate the substantial linguistic curriculum with further elements of culture study. The move is in our view necessary as we maintain that there can be no adequate and complete communicative competence unless it includes cultural competence as well.
