Overview of EURADOS activities for individual monitoring

Over the last decade EURADOS (European Radiation Dosimetry) has coordinated the working group on Harmonisation of Individual Monitoring in Europe (known as Working Group 2 – WG2) for three terms: 1. In period 1996-2000 main task was the evaluation of the implementation of EC Council Directive 96/29 Euratom of 13 May 1996 with the respect to monitoring persons occupationally exposed to ionizing radiation in terms of the then new quantity personal dose equivalent, also in the view of the then recently published Techical Recommendations EUR 14852. 2. In period 2001-2005 main tasks were continuation of the previous activities adding the implementation of standards ; the use of active (electronic) dosemeters and topics on QA and QC. The main achievements from these two periods will be presented. 3. In period 2005-present WG2 operated in two subgroups, namely SG1 and SG2 having discrete tasks as follows: - Subgroup 1: Review of the EUR 14852 - Techical Recommendations for monitoring individuals occupationally exposed to external radiation, - Subgroup 2: Proposal for the preparation of Self-Supporting Intercomparisons In Europe. The arguments for considering a revision of EUR 14852 are new international standards in the field of metrology and dosimetry with specific requirements regarding accuracy, performance and the assessment of the uncertainty of measurements, record keeping as well as the free movement of workers in EU. Previous work of EURADOS WG2 have established that intercomparisons are fundamental for harmonisation of individual monitoring services (IMS). Intercomparisons stimulate IMS to improve the quality of their results, provide information on IMS performance throughout EU and assist harmonisation of quality control standards. The plan is for a 3 year cycle as follows: (1.) whole body photon dosemeters intercomparison in 2008, (2.) extremity dosemeters intercomparison in 2009, and (3.) whole body photon (again) + neutron dosemetrs intercomparison in 2010.
