Radical prostatectomy in the treatment of prostate cancer
Here we describe diagnostic principles, indications, operative techniques and results for 133 cases of radical prostatectomy for cancer. At the Clinic of Urology at Osijek University Hospital and Sisters of Mercy University Hospital, Croatia, Urologic Clinic High Medical School, Essen, and in Huyessens Foundation Evangelical Hospital, Department of Urology, Pediatric Urology and Oncologic Urology, Essen, Germany, 133 patients undergoing radical prostatectomy were followed up during six months after operation. The indication for operation included a localized disease. Retropubic prostatectomy with extraperitoneal lymphadenotomy was the generally accepted technique. Our experience corresponds to the results of other authors. There was no postoperative mortality. Vesicoureteral stenosis (14.2%) was the most frequent complication, which was higher then published results. Although not yet accepted as a routine operation, retropubic prostatectomy, when correctly performed yields good results in localized prostate cancer, with practically no mortality and with an acceptable percentage of complications.
