Sefardi Refugees in 16th Century Ragusa (Dubrovnik)
The 16th century is considered as an especially intriguing period concerning Jewish life in Dubrovnik. At the beginning of the century Ragusan government opposed the fact that a number of Jews intended to settle in Dubrovnik. But in 1530's, the situation was completely changed. Since a number of Jews tried again to came to stay in Dubrovnik, Ragusan goverment established the ghetto which should be understood as a sign of acceptance. In the 16th century Dubrovnik, in the Jewish community were several distinguished personalities, such as famous physician Amatus Lusitanus, the poet Didacus Phyrrus and the Rabbi Solomon Oeff (Ohev). This paper comprises 44 transcriptions of the documents from the archival series Diversi e Possesso de Criminali (State Archives of Dubrovnik) concerning Jewish life in the 16th centrury Dubrovnik.
