Biomonitoring of chlorinated pesticides and PCBs in the eastern Adriatic coastal waters using mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis as indicator

Biomonitoring of chlorinated pesticides and PCBs, using mussels Mytilus galloprovincialis as very popular and widespread indicator organisms, was performed during 2002-2005 period along the Eastern Adriatic coast.The general pattern of organic contaminants distribution was characterized by higher PCBs concentrations in relation to chlorinated pesticides, reflecting the prevailing influence of industrial sources of contamination over the agricultural ones.Regarding spatial distribution, the elevated contaminant concentration was generally found in mussels collected near urban and/or industrialized centers with high input of industrial, harbour and urban wastewaters.
