Students' attitudes towards civic education at the university

The task of teacher education depends on what teachers must be prepared to do. If teaching is merely transmitting information to students, one could argue that teachers need little more than the basic content of knowledge and skills at university level. For this kind of teaching, it is easy to believe that a little subject matter knowledge alone could be sufficient preparation for the future teacher. But if teachers need to be able to promote the basic values of civic education at primary and secondary school level and to be active citizens themselves, then a radical rethinking of priorities is needed, in teacher education including the redevelopment and recasting of university subjects. Namely, it is obvious that teacher education is a key issue when it comes to preparing future teachers for their roles as civic educators. This cannot be left as an option in teacher education programs at the university because when they enter schools, teachers must be ready to contribute to the civic education program of the school. The aim of this paper is to examine students’ opinions, attitudes and considerations regarding the importance and necessity of introducing civic education curriculum at the university as well as the contents that should, in students’ opinion, be taught within civic education at the university, the best form and approach to teaching civic education and the most suitable period for introducing civic education into the school system. Finally, we examined the competencies and skills, key concepts and values on civic education that teachers should possess for successful teaching and student participation in humanitarian and other social and political activities at university and local community level.
