Variability of Silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) provenances in number of lateral buds on the terminal sprout and damage by the late frost

Background and Purpose: Diversity within single species becomes increasingly important in recent years. Research of variability of different traits within single species, particularly in trees, has been studied with provenance trials. Silver fir is the most important coniferous species in Croatia. Variability of various firs’ traits originating from different parts of Croatia was tested in the provenance trial. Materials and Methods Trial was established with five years old seedlings in Brloško, Gorski kotar region, in spring of the 2000. Total of 8000 seedlings from eighteen Croatian and two neighbouring Slovenian provenances were planted according to randomized block design in four repetitions. Of many properties that were measured, important for this work are number lateral buds on terminal sprout (NoLBTS) and late frost damage to newly formed sprouts on seedlings that were observed on systematic sample of 1600 seedlings. Measurements were made during period from autumn 2002 to autumn 2004. Results and Conclusions Average NoLBTS in the trial for seedlings of age 8 to 10 years was 3.29 ; 3.21 ; 3.59 , respectively, with constant standard error of mean of 0.03. Repeated measure ANOVA and Tukey post hoc test showed that NoLBTS in 2004 differs significantly from the NoLBTS in 2002 and 2003. Also, significant was the difference among provenances and interaction year × provenance. Damage from the late frost was not equal in all provenances. Cluster analysis by fraction of severely damaged seedlings in the provenance showed grouping of provenances in three distinct groups. There was no significant correlation between frost damage to young sprouts and altitude of origin of provenance.
