The effects of gizzerosine on laying hens
The paper describes the effects of gizzerosine on gizzard erosions and serum level of vitamin D in laying hens. Five groups of 21 hens each were used in the experiment. Control (K) group received saline, while G1, G2, G3 and G4 groups were treated with gizzerosine in the following increasing doses: 2.5, 5, 7.5 and 10 mg/kg bw. Gizzerosine dissolved in 6 ml saline or saline alone was introduced into the crop by plastic flexible tube daily for 21 day. At the end of each three week 7 hens from each group were sacrificed, gizzards were open and gizzard erosion were measured. Blood samples from treated and control birds were taken on days 7, 14 and 21 of the experiment. All doses of gizzerosine induced lesions after the first week, while after the second week onla the smalles and the largest dose caused erosions, and at the end of experiment none of the examined animals from each group have significant gozzard lesions. 1, 25(OH)2D level remained unchanged on day 7 in treated birds as compared to control group. After day 14, it was significantly lower in G2, G3 and G4 groups, as compared to controls. On day 21, 1, 25-dihydroxycholecalciferol serum level decreased significantly in all four gizzerosine treated groups.
