Application of smaller wind turbines in power production on the shore and on islands
The potential for using small wind turbines for the supply of electric power in the specific context of coastal and island areas is presented. The mode of operation of a small wind turbine system is reviewed as well as some of the parameters that influence wind turbine efficiency in the conversion of wind energy. Small wind turbine capacities are appropriate for supplying electrical energy to consumers outside the electric grid. These consumers can save fossil fuel in autonomous power systems and contribute to the energy balance of cogeneration systems. Furthermore, as a non-polluting source of energy, this power system can provide a portion of the energy required for accommodating the tourism industry. Together with photovoltaic modules, small wind turbines provide a sustainable alternative for supplying households with electrical energy. The approach is described using a Croatian example, but is applicable for any area with similar conditions.
