LIS Programs Reflecting the Needs of ALM Community: a Preliminary Research Report

Recent effects of global information infrastructure have influenced archives, museum and libraries in such a way that their services have become intertwined. The issue of education for future information professionals has therefore taken on an unexpected topicality, in particular in the context of redefining academic curricula in LIS schools. In Croatia, similar to other countries, possibilities of new curricula introduction, exchange of student body and faculty members' cooperation, have been looked at. In this paper the authors give special attention to the development of new educational profiles, based on the experiences gained at the annual meetings of professionals from archives, libraries and museums in Rovinj, Croatia where new academic curricula and professional development programs have been discussed as well. In order to get an insight into the programs of European and American schools designed for LIS, Archival and Museum work professionals, accredited by professional bodies, especially regarding the changes in their curriculum, relevant for the ALM (Archives– Libraries– Museums) community, the research into programs of US and European LIS, Archival, and Museum studies was undertaken. The research identifies university programs and educational institutions preparing future professionals in ALM field, shows comparative indicators and singles out contents/programs important for all three sectors.
