Waste management system in Croatia towards EU accession
Waste management is one of the key issues of environmental protection policy in Croatia. Although significant step forward have been archived through transposition of EU waste directives in to the Croatian environmental legislation in the last few years, still lack of information and low public awareness made waste issues one of the biggest environmental challenges. The Strategy for Waste management (2005) and the Waste management Plan (2007) significantly increased the level of efficient analysis and planning and took a key part in sustainable waste management. The main objective of the recently adapted waste management plan is the overview of current waste flows and waste treatment and also the future trends. Bottom up planning approach have been used and the activities have been build on counties /regional waste management plans. Further implementation strategy is foreseen covering waste production, waste collection practice and treatment, polluter pay principle and affordability issues and financial needs.
