Pre-competitive anxiety in children: evaluation of questionnairre

The research was conducted on a sample of 48 children, in two forth grades, who are attending one elementary school in central Croatia. Average age of girls and boys at the time of assessments was 10-yrs. The research, whose goal was to determine the level of state anxiety before competition, was conducted using the Competitive State Anxiety Questionnaire - CSAI-2C (Stadulis et al., 2002). The CSAI-2C, especially designed instrument for children was developed on the basis of older instrument CSAI-2 (Martens et al., 1990) in order to assess three dimensions of state anxiety: cognitive anxiety (worry), somatic anxiety (physical) and self-confidence. Completion of the questionnaire was achieved by assessing how the child feels at the exact moment and indicating one of the offered answers, which are: not at all (1), little bit (2), quite (3) and very much so (4). The children were competing in the game called „ Graničar“ (in Croatian) that was followed after the completion of the questionnaire. The results of the CSAI-2C were acquired by calculating the analysis of variance. The results showed that there was no statistically significant differences between boys and girls, both girls and boys experienced similar level of state anxiety before the competition. The instruments showed good internal reliability – Cronbach ALPHA'S were .698 and .715 for cognitive and somatic anxiety, respectively, and .776 for self-confidence.
