Pathogenicity of Fusarium species to wheat and barley ears
During a ten-year period 3128 isolates (87 from weed plants, 1528 from wheat grains, 562 barley grains, 951 maize grains) of Fusarium species were identified. Nine species of Fusarium were isolated from wheat, seven from barley and maize grains, respectively, and four species from weed plants. Field inoculation of wheat and barley ears revealed differences in pathogenicity among investigated Fusarium species. Isolates of F. graminearum and F. culmorum were the most pathogenic. Depending on F. graminearum isolate, percentage of infected wheat grains was between 62.50 and 88.00 and percentage of infected barley grains was between 64.75 and 79.00. Out of a total of infected wheat and barley grains, only 29.33 to 50.25% germinated. TKW was reduced between 33.50 and 58.25%, if compared to control.
