Estimation of Suitability of Some Clay for Use as Isolation Layer in Landfill for Tannery Sludge

Tannery waste and sludge from tannery sewage are classified as hazardous wastes and must therfore be deposited in specillly protected landfills. The isolation of the landfill must protect groundwater from dangerous and harmful toxic components in the effluent, particularly those containing chromium. The isolation layer is most commonly made up of low permeable of impermeable clays. In this paper we analyze a sample of clay from a clay deposit near Varaždin in order to determine its suitability as isolation material.
