Sondermassnahmen beim Light Rail Zagreb Projekt

Summary: Last decade have shown important need to improve the traffic situation in the city of Zagreb, Croatia. Therefore first developments have been undertaken in order to establish fast and sound public traffic system that should act complementary to existing public transportation. The solution that has been foreseen is a light rail system that consists of basically 2 main lines in direction north-south and east – west. The entire length of these 2 lines is about 32 km length and consist of 3 main parts : underground, surface parts or elevated sections. The length of underground parts is planned to have in the first phase the length of about 5, 9 km. The elevated part should be long 4, 9 km and the rest should be new constructed on the surface or should use existing tramway network. Beside conceptual design and evaluation of buildability of the system first estimations have investigated the range of the overall project costs as well as time dependent project development. The city of Zagreb is stretching mostly in the flat area below the hill of Medvednica and the river Save. The whole town area having something about 1 million inhabitants lays on layers of gravel with sand pockets having depth of about 10-15 meters and with clayey layers situated deeper. There are two main ground water levels in the underground that are very much depending on the water level in the river Save. Tunneling works that are foreseen on new light rail lines will require diverse soil improvement measures on the protection of tunnels and surrounding buildings on the service. One overview of foreseen measures and pertinent construction methodologies will be presented in the article.
