The Aspects of Broadband Internet Access in Rural Areas

Research, development and implementation of modern information and communications technologies (ICT) has became essential for economic growth and prosperity. Republic of Croatia tends to follow European trends in development of information society and knowledge-based economy. The basic precondition for realization of information society is high-speed Internet access over broadband communication lines. This paper gives an overview of technologies for providing broadband Internet access in rural areas. Authors also analyze current Croatian situation considering rural broadband. Possible services and applications based on broadband infrastructure are also analyzed. Finally, potential economic aspects of rural broadband are highlighted.
