The Implementation of the Concept of Sustainable Development in the Hotel Industry : the Case of the Istrian Country
The implementation of the concept of sustainable development within the hotel industry is vital to the industry's future because it will help ensure thriving, attractive and welcoming destinations that will draw tourists. Socially and environmentally responsible practice can contribute to maintain a high level of tourist satisfaction and ensure meaningful experience to tourists, raising the awareness about sustainability issues and promoting sustainable tourism practices among them. The aim of the paper was to research the importance of the implementation of the concept of sustainable development for hotel companies, considering that many of them all over the world already recognise it as a long-term source of competitive advantage. The authors have analysed the importance of the concept of sustainable tourism for big hotel companies in the Istrian County, which is considered as one of the most developed tourism counties of Croatia. The research has shown that, considering that the implementation of sustainable development into the business practice is a long-term and complex process, the observed companies are just at the beginning of their journey.
