Method for generation of the primary response fields in bending and restrained torsion of thin-walled structures

A method for simplified primary strength calculation of complex thin-walled structure is presented. Bending and torsion of the structure are modeled with the accuracy required for the concept design. A 2.5D-FEM model is developed by coupling a 1D-FEM model along the monotonity axis and a 2D-FEM model (s) transverse to it. The shear flow and stiffness characteristics of the cross-section for bending and pure/restrained torsion are given, based upon the warping field of the cross-section. It provides the dominant response field for design feasibility assessment. The model is tested against full 3D FEM MSC Nastran models on theoretical examples and for the ship hull. The method is applied as a part of the analysis module in the decision making OCTOPUS environment ; concept design using e.g. IACS CSR for tankers ; or generation of the stress boundary conditions for the partial 3D FEM models.
