Fibre reinforced polymer products in civil engineering
As maintenance and rehabilitation cost of the concrete and prestressed structures are increasing, a new approach is considered: structures with non-metal reinforcement. Different types of fibre reinforced polymer (FRP) are being used instead of classic (steel) reinforced. Due to inconsistence of different procedures for research and characterisation of material, general direction for designing this kind of structures isn’ t part of building codes. More importantly, FRP products are increasingly adopted in all engineering fields i.e. mining engineering, but not so often in civil engineering. This article will show basic properties of FRP as a new composite material that is primarily used for rehabilitation of concrete, prestressed concrete, steel and timber structures. It can be used for rehabilitation of structures that have cracks and damages from earthquake, fire, explosion, reinforcement corrosion, strengthening of structural parts etc. This article will focus on the FRP cables, bars and sheets.
