Structural relations between virgin and management beech-fir stands (Omphalodo-Fagetum Marincek et al. 1992) in forests of the Croatian Dinaric Karst

Purpose: The purpose of the research was to compare the basic structural indices of the Dinaric beech-fir virgin forest with beech-fir management stands and a normal model of a management beech fir stand. The respective distributions of the tree number and volume were also compared. Material and Methods: The research was carried out in beech-fir forests of the Plitvice Lakes National Park. A system sample of sixty-eight plots was established in the Čorkova Uvala virgin forest, on intersections of the Gauss-Kruger system, upon a ruling screen of 100 in. In the neighbouring management stands of Čorkova Uvala and Krivi Javor two plots were laid out. On all plots a total survey of the basic taxation parameters was carried out: tree number frequency per species and diameter degrees and the height per tree species. The observed volume distributions per diameter degrees and tree species were fitted by Gauss distribution. The tree number distributions per diameter degrees were fitted by Meyer density function. Results: The results show the application of normal Gauss distribution as a model for fir-beech volume fitting per diameter degrees, and the application of Meyer's density function as the model for fitting the distribution of the number of trees per diameter degrees in the comparative structure analysis of beech-fir virgin forests and management forests of the same species. Conclusion: The virgin forest of Čorkova Uvala is characterised by a singletree structure and a descending distribution of the tree number: The value of the linear progression coefficient (q) does not indicate that the virgin forest has a typical selection structure. The normal volume distributions of beech and fir are rather separated. The increasing management intensity causes the distributions to become closer. The normal volume distribution of the management stand Krivi favor-80 most resembles the management forest model. Selection management supports the growth of young trees and sustainability in selection stands.
