Influence of plant density on some agronomic traits of Amaranthus spp.
The objective of investigations carried out in 2005 and 2006 was to assess the influence of plant density (50 and 100 plants m-2) on some agronomic traits of grain amaranth cultivars (Plainsman, Koniz, No 29) as well as the duration of particular growth and development stages. Cultivar Plainsman produced the significantly highest yield in the year with favourable distribution of precipitation while cultivar No 29 manifested better adjustment to small amounts of precipitation. Highest seed yield was achieved with the plant density of 50 plants m-2, while other traits studied were not affected by plant density. Owing to its lower height and faster drying of plant mass, cultivar Koniz is better suited to the agroecological conditions of northwestern Croatia ; however, its low seed yield is a limiting factor for its production.
