Neuroendocrine-immune-nutritional interactions in chronic stress

Neuroendocrine-immune-nutritional interactions in chronic stress The nature of stress-induced alterations in homeostatic systems is difficult to evaluate in humans. Our aim was to assess the interactions between psychological, immunological, hormonal and nutritional states in a group of 29 detainees released from the concentration camp of Manjača, and a group of 15 residents of Zagreb, not directly exposed to war trauma. Psychological status was assessed according to anxiety and depressive symptoms (COR-NEX2 and Hamilton scales). Nutritional status was estimated by serum albumin and total protein levels, while the pituitary, adrenal and thyroid hormones gave us an insight into HPA response. Immune responses were assessed by enumerative parameters (lymphocyte subsets) and by testing for lymphocyte, phagocyte and NK cell functions. The multivariate canonical correlation revealed that psychological and nutritional variables correlated with T lymphocyte activation and non-specific immune functions, while hormonal and psychological states contributed to the relation with immunofunctional variables. By cluster analysis, all variables employed were structured into four clusters, reflecting more or less the same relation among the psychological, endocrine, immune and nutritional states.
