Sialoglycoconjugates in the carp brain
It has been reported that sialic acid epitopes exist in fish, but their distribution has not been investigated so far. Using highly-specific IgG anti-ganglioside antibodies, antibody against PSA-NCAM and SNA and MAA lectins on carp brain sections, we studied the distribution of the corresponding molecules. GM1 was not deteced anywhere in the analyzed samples. GD1b was found only in subcortical nuclei, which are involved in movement of tail fin. Ganglioside GD1a was found on practically all neurons in telencephalon, tectum mesencephali and cerebellum. Contrary to mouse, rat and human, in carp brain GD1a was found to be located in fibers that connect cortex to subcortical structures and in some pontine sensory fibers. The distribution of GT1b was similar to that of GD1a, but GT1b was less present in telencephalon and more present in cerebellum. Contrary to distribution of gangliosides that were present either in somata or in axons, SNA and MAA lectins were binding to epitopes in both of these structures. The distribution of PSA-NCAM in fish brain was similar to that of GD1a, except in cerebellum and caudally from it. These observations clearly demonstrate that the distribution of sialoglycoconjugates in fish brain significantly differs from their distribution in mammalian brain.
