Investigation of the possible causes for rejects of pressure die cast al engine carriers
This paper deals with the problem of cutting edge wear and tap cracking (M18x1, 5 mm) while tapping of steel sleeves in the car engine carriers. These carriers are made by pressure die casting of AlSi9Cu3 (Fe) alloy. "3 D" device was used to check dimensions of the castings. The simulation of a heat treatment ("annealing") was performed because steel sleeves are subjected to this process during pressure die casting of Al castings. Sleeve dimensions and sleeve hardness were tested before and after annealing. Taps with TiN and TiC surface layer were tested. The results show that the problems with tapping of sleeves occur because of the inadequate diameter of steel sleeves and not because of their hardness.
