Interspecies differences in distribution of complex gangliosides
Distribution of complex gangliosides extremly varies between fish, amphibian and reptile brains, but becomes invariable from birds up to higher vertebrates. Variability of ganglioside distribution correlates well with the potential for regeneration, being highest for the fish brain expressing only GT1b and approaching zero in central nervous system of bird. The potential for regeneration is better correlated with appearance of GM1 in myelin then with the distribution of GD1a and GT1b which are putative glycolipid ligands for MAG and inhibitors of regeneration.
