Application of information content and numerical taxonomy in the development of HPLC methods
Using a set of 15 quinolone derivatives analysed by means of 9chromatographic systems, two different decision making tools inHPLC were tested. Information content and numerical taxonomy wereapplied to select the optimal set of rationally chosenchromatographic systems. Selectivity was evaluated on the basisof retention data of individual substances in all of the systems.Standardized k' data were shown to be more relevant thanretention times or unprocessed k'. When used with suitable inputdata, both methods proved to be powerful tools in selecting theoptimum combination of HPLC systems to analyze a large number ofreal substances having complex structures.
