Intellectual Politics: European consciousness: literary, cultural and civilisational aspects

The subject of this paper is the politicization of engagement and the clash of different styles and languages of engagement. Even what Foucault understands as “ specific” intellectual tradition has always allowed space of tension between activism in print and activism through public action. On the other hand, a prolonged debate on what it means to be an “ intellectual” is constantly shifting its focus in accordance with the historical moment. For example, Romain Rolland’ s type of commitment in the 1920s is now impossible to analyze without proper understanding of his immediate postwar dilemma.Current debates on intellectual engagement still in the time of “ the cultural Cold War” preserved some of the arguments connected to the historical definition of the concept of “ intelligentsia” . In recent articles collected and published under the title Interventions, Chomsky made his intellectual policy tune with the post 9/11 situation in the States. However, in spite of the wide range of subjects – from 9/11 and, the Iraq war to Social Security and Intelligent Design, South America and Asia, the Israeli occupation of Palestine and the election of Hamas, Hurricane Katrina, and the US concept of "just war" – the old- fashioned principle of responsibility remained in the fundaments of Chomsky’ s style of political activism.
