Monitoring of reproductive success during breeding season in extensively kept mares of Posavina breed
In freely grazing horses, a continuous monitoring of the reproduction season is difficult. Due to the lack of information on the time and intensity of mounts in such animals, in a herd of 31 mares of the Croatian breed Hrvatski Posavac of various age, freely grazing with stallions, several parallel pregnancy diagnostics methods were used. The mares were clinically tested on pregnancy by rectal and ultrasound examination and two parallel fast tests for determination of progesterone in serum were done. In addition to the usual ovucheck elisa (Biomedica GmbH) test, which has been a standard at the Clinic for Obstetrics for several years, serums have been tested by means of a fast orientation progesterone test premate equine (Biomedica GmbH). It is a new product on our market and its advantage, similar to the target tests for dogs and cattle, is its simple use on the field. The results of the clinical test (rectal and ultrasound) complied in 94% cases with the results of both tests, and the results of the fast Premate Equine test complied in 100% cases with the results of the standard ELISA Ovucheck test. False positive test results were obtained in two non-pregnant mares with persistent corpus luteum, which was reflected on the progesterone level in serum. Subsequent rectal and ultrasound controls proved the accuracy of rectal results. In our opinion, the application of Premate Equine test makes possible the introduction of a new, very precise method for diagnostics of mare pregnancy and monitoring the cycle in mares. The procedure is particularly suitable for the monitoring of reproductive status of freely grazing mares, which is the most frequent way of keeping the Croatian breed Hrvatski Posavac.
