The Hidden History of Imagination
The paper deals with the changing fortunes of the concept of imagination in philosophy: from epistemology to aesthetics, the concept is sometimes exalted and sometimes denigrated. From Aristotle to cognitive science, from Plato to contemporary theory, imagination has a hidden history. Is it one of the basic human faculties or a concept like the notorious phlogiston, purported to explain the process of burning? The paper exemplifies the overall question by reconstructing the relationship between mental images and imagination.
