Angiotensin converting enzyme gene polymorphism: the importance of I allele in oarsmen

A specific marker that influences human physical performance has not been identified. Candidate genes with potential significance in control of cardiovascular adaptation to exercise might be found in the renin angiotensin system (RAS) which plays a key role in the regulation of both cardiac and vascular physiology. ACE gene is an important component of RAS. ACE gene has been cloned and the gene effect shown to be associated with an insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism of an Alu regiment in intron 16. An insertion allele of the gene is associated with outstanding performance during high-altitude mountaineering. In this study we investigated ACE gene insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism using PCR in 34 oarsmen and compared them with suitably matched control population. Rowing was selected because it is an endurance sport. Results of the ACE genotyping showed that 16 (47.1%) oarsmen were homozygous for II allele, 6(17.6%) were homozygous for DD allele, and 12 (35.3%) were heterozygotes, while in control group there were 8 II (24%), 8 DD (24%) and 18 ID genotypes (52%). The frequency of the II allele in oarsmen was 0.65 (p< 0, 05 vs the control group). Compared with control group the oarsmen had an excess of ACE I allele and the ACE II genotype. The findings suggest that the insertion allele of the ACE gene may be responsible for their outstanding sport results.
