Ergonomic consequences of Chinese footbinding: A case study
Footprint pressure patterns of a 90 year-old Chinese female with bound feet were obtained and compared to the footprint pressure patterns for her 56 year old daughter with normal feet. Foot pressure distribution patterns for both types of conditions were documented. Analysis revealed that the bound foot condition produced greater plantar tissue pressures than the normal (non-bound) foot. These results help explain the discomfort, gait abnormalities, and disabilities experienced by women with bound feet today. The study was intended to provide an ergonomic perspective of a custom that still impacts the health and well being of older women in present day China
