Flow in collapsible tubes
This study used elastic models of thick walled physiological flow conditions. The mode exhibited flow choking when stenoses were greater than 80 % by diameter. The choked flow rates were less than the normal peak systolic flow in human carotid arteries inducating the physiologic range for this phenomenon. Maximum velocities at the throat of the phantoms were approximately 6 m/s, consistent with those measured by Duplex scanning in human carotids. The dynamic pressure conditions contributed to increasing the severity of the elastic stenosis at high velocities. Hemodynamic compression of rupture of carotid plaques.
