Triassic Terrains of Adriatic and Dinarides (Croatia)

Triassic terrains of Adriatic and Dinarides (Croatia) belong to the Late Pangea and Early Tethys time as proposed by Gaetani et al. (2003). They originated from area of maximum extension between Gondwana and Laurasia, i.e. future Apulia continental block. Triassic Apulia itself was stretched with basic rift geometry of horsts and grabens (Tari, 2002) and affected with magmatism in Middle Triassic and Upper Triassic-Early Jurassic times. Three terrains are encountered within the Adria Block. Terrain “ A” is characterized by Ladinian marine clastics, carbonates and volcanics of Pangea Time and Norian and Rhaetian shallow marine dolomites. The transition from Pangea to Tethys time is marked with Carnian unconformity. Terrain “ B” consists of Lower Ladinian continental clastics of the Pangea Time and Norian and Rhaetian dolomites. The transition from Pangea to Tethys time is marked with Carnian unconformity. Terrain “ C” is represented by Upper Ladinian to Norian evaporites and carbonates of Pangea passing into Tethys Time and Rhaetian shallow marine dolomites (Burano Formation). Croatian part of the Dinarides is characterized with Middle Triassic magmatism and horst to graben deposition. Late Jurassic compressional tectonics generated Dinaridic Thrust Belt bringing together various Triassic terrains by thrusting (Eocene to Miocene) and strike-slip faulting (Miocene to recent). Terrain “ 1” is characterized by continuous carbonate platform deposition from Lower to Upper Triassic, intruded only by Ladinian and Carnian pyroclastics. Terrain “ 2” is characterized by Lower Triassic clastic and carbonates and transgressive Carnian clastics followed by Hauptdolomite (Norian-Rhaetian). Terrain “ 3” is characterized by continuous predominantly carbonate shelf deposition from Lower Triassic to Ladinian which is intruded by pyroclastics, and with transgressive Norian and Rhaetian Hauptdolomite. Terrain “ 4” is represented by Lower Triassic clastics and carbonates followed by Anisian and Ladinian volcanics, clastics and carbonates and by transgressive Carnian clastics after regional emersion in Late Ladinian, which is often marked with bauxite. Norian and Rhaetian is represented by Hauptdolomite. Terrain “ 5” is composed of Lower Triassic clastics and carbonates, Anisian supratidal carbonates and Ladinian volcanics, clastics and carbonates. During Upper Triassic the terrain was emerged.
