The incidente of BER- affected tomatoes under influence of the form of nitrogen fertilizer
Calcium is a very important nutrient in highly productive fruit growing such as glasshouse- grown tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.). BER is related to Ca deficiency in the fruits. It was postulated that Ca uptake could be affected if NH4-N form prevail in the fertilization. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of different N forms (NO3-, NH4+) and rates on fruit yield and quality of tomato plants in a greenhouse. In two-years experiment (2005-2006) performed in Baranya region of Croatia, the tomato cultivar Belle F1, was grown in heated greenhouse, on the garden soil mixed with turf, cattle manure and send. Both nitrate and ammonia forms of nitrogen fertilizer were applied separately at three different N-levels: 300, 500, 800 mg N plant-1week-1. In the final harvest no BER tomatoes occurred at the aplication rate of 300 mg N and very few were observed at 500 mg N plant- 1week-1. However, at 800 mg N plant- 1week-1 and high air temperature in the greenhouse, the NH4- N treatments gave the lowest yields, due to high incident of BER tomatoes fruit.
