Apo B/Apo A-I in prediction of stroke

INTRODUCTION: Measuring of total, HDL and LDL cholesterol and triglicerides is not enough to determine one’ s complete lipid status, so this test panel is expanded by measuring apolipoproteins ; mainly Apo B which is part of atherogenic lipoproteins and Apo AI, a component of antiatherogenic HDL particles. Recently, many studies reported that the Apo B/Apo A-I ratio is a better predicting factor for developing cardiovascular events than LDL cholesterol. OBJECTIVE: Aim of this study was to investigate whether a high Apo B/Apo A-I ratio ratio is significantly associated with the risk of developing stroke. METHODS: In our study we evaluated 70 patients with stroke and 68 age and sex matched controls without cerebrovascular deficit. Apo A-I and Apo B were measured by immunoturbidimetric method (Olympus). RESULTS: There was no difference in Apo A-1 (stroke: 1.33 &plusmn ; 0.29 vs control group: 1.41&plusmn ; 0.24 ; P = 0.0724) and Apo B concentration (stroke: 1.02 (0.89-1.16) vs control group: 0.95 (0.84-1.13) ; P=0.2184). Statistically significant difference was found in Apo B/Apo A-I ratio (stroke: 0.83 (0.64-0.93) vs control group: 0.67 (0.57-0.86) ; p= 0.0189). CONCLUSION: A high Apo B/Apo A1 ratio is significantly associated with the risk of developing stroke.
