The model of dimensioning the optimal size of the parking area

A rapid increase in the number of motor vehicles in the world has caused serious problems to an undisturbed running of traffic in cities, especially at the moment of finding free parking space for them. This leads to consequences such as, among other, road congestion, decrease of traffic flux capabilites, decrease of velocity of flux, increased exploitation costs, increase of traffic accidents, etc. The problem of parking is especially pronounced in central parts of cities due to a high concentration of various activities and little available space for parking vehicles used while performing such activities. Existing parking space, in its capacity and location, does not satisfy present needs, let alone future needs. In order to avoid the abovementioned consequences, it is necessary to provide for adequate separate space for parking vehicles off the road surface, such as open parking spaces and garage - parking facilities. In the process of designing and planning the new, or redeveloping the existing parking space, it is necessary to determine all the relevant parameters which influence the process of parking in order to define the optimal size of parking facilities. As researching in real conditions is very expensive and long, in most cases the simulating model method is used for solving traffic and transport problems.
