Prehistoric mortuary habits in Croatia refering to Paleolithic, Mesolithic and Neolithic
Prehistoric mortuary habits in Croatia from Palaeolithic, Mesolithic to Neolithic were given referring back to original discoveries (papers). Beginning with the Krapina, the outhor presented different opinions related to mortuary practise, at the site in question, giving the insight to a possible cannibalism as well as to a designation of the Krapina hominid material as the so-called Neanderthal "burial" sample. Funeral cult rituals of the Palaeolithic hunters from Vindija G3 occupation level were also described. Further hominid findings from Upper Palaeolithic prehistoric sites e.g. Velika pećina, Romualdova pećina etc. are presented as generally single and no specific accompanyning burial traces were found. On the other hand, skeletal remains at Šandalja II (Late Upper Palaeolithic culture) point to intrahuman requital during which inhabitants of Šandalja II were most probably attacked by another population group. Further descriptions of mortuary practise refer to Mesolithic, pointing to a possible skull cult in the Veternica cave. As with the Neolithic period, the outhor refers to a Neolithic tomb also found in the Veternica cave. Further descriptions of Neolithic mortuary habits are related to the Starčevo and Sopot cultures with the detailed descriptions of all the findings along with the accompanying archaeological material.
