Hominid remains from prehistoric sites in Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina
To the best of our knowledge so far only a few comprehensive reports on hominid sites referring to the region of ex Yugoslavia have been presented, mainly by Malez (1979, 1980) and Mikić (1981). In addition reports on hominid finds generally from Krapina, Vindija and Velika pećina (Croatia) that were presented by Smith (1976 a, 1976 b, 1982, 1984), Smith and Ahern (1994), Smith et al. (1985), Wolpoff (1980), Wolpoff et al. (1981), Radovčić et al. (1988) are scattered over many publications with some outdated results of study. The goal of this report was to give a new critical evaluation of all prehistoric hominid finds from the region of Croatia, complemented with most recent data on the sites from Slovenia and Bosnia and Herzegovina. This survey refers not only to the recent evolutionary trends, but to pathology and anomalies, whenever possible, as to provide a holistic insight into genetical, cultural and environmental influents on the populations in question and their possible interaction.
