Aircraft Aerodynamic Noise Measurement
Aircraft noise in flight is mostly produced from propulsion system (engine and propeller, for propeller driven aircraft), but one part of the noise come from air stream over aircraft surfaces (wings, airframe etc) – it is aerodynamic or airframe noise. Intensity of aerodynamic noise is significantly lower then propulsion system noise, but it is interesting and useful to measure its intensity at different conditions of flight (flight level, velocity) or in rest. This paper deals with specifying of noise sources and origins, overviews suitable methodologies for noise predicting, measuring and control. Results of noise measurements of Piper PA-44-180 Seminole aircraft in flight and on ground are given. Aerodynamic noise is separated from total noise using some known characteristics of propulsion noise and aerodynamic noise. Research procedures and results are presented and commented.
