Modelling wind and temperature profiles in katabatic flow
Analytical and numerical modeling of simple katabatic flows blowing over long cool slopes is assessed. Since it was verified that classical scaling via Monin-Obukhov length performs over such slopes rather poorly (a low-level jet usually determines the surface fluxes), our improved Prandtl model is used instead. We specifically address a single problem: the mixing length-scale within the SABL, i.e. in the "z-less" or local regime, as often parameterized in mesoscale models with a higher-order closure turbulence scheme, and a way to improve this length-scale by including shear effects explicitly. The numerical meteorological model deployed is MIUU model ; it is improved via its mixing length-scale (in its turbulence parameterization scheme) by its tune up toward the improved Prandtl solutions. In this way, lower and more faithful low-level jets and near-surface inversion may be modeled.
