Teachers' assessment of competences provided by initial teacher training

The paper presents classroom and subject teachers' assessment of competences achieved during their initial teacher training. The sample comprised 1334 classroom teachers and 2134 subject teachers from 121 Croatian schools. The skills and knowledge assessed in this study were selected so to form a scale covering 17 domains of teacher professional work in school. The comparison between two groups of teachers reveals that classroom teachers were most satisfied with the practical part of the education (teaching methodologies and school practice), followed by academic curriculum and educational sciences curriculum. Subject teachers expressed the highest satisfaction with the academic curriculum and relationship with their teachers, followed by the practical part of their education. Participants provided suggestions for the improvement of the current initial teacher education curriculum.
