Safety of Diagnostic Ultrasound in Obstetrics
Abstract Safety of diagnostic ultrasound as used in obstetrics and gynecology is critically evaluated in this chapter. Physical background of ultrasound wave interaction with tissues has been described with particular attention to safety aspects. The thermal and the various non-thermal mechanisms of possible hazardous interactions within the body have been described. Mechanical index (cavitation) and thermal indices (heating) have been described and their practical value discussed. Labeling as required by official administrations and agencies (including the ODS) has been described. In the discussion it has been shown that while there exist potentially hazardous mechanisms, none of the conjectured adverse effects have been proven as long as the exposure levels were within the limits cited in the chapter. A list of practical instructions for the safety conscious operator has been included.
