Introductory Notes to the Topic of Discursive Identity in Performing Arts

This paper starts from the presupposition that the crucial change in the understanding of the process of individuation in performing arts is going to take place once we introduce the term discursive identity into the context of the art science. In a number of introductory theses into the larger topic of discursive identity in performing arts, the author specifies point of interest in the research that should ideally be conducted within the framework of a larger scientific project that explores in the relational space of culture, by way of science, performing theory and performance practice, taking into consideration the results of so-called theories of identity. Starting form the definition of the discourse as a set of inter-subjective patterns whose internal structure is a subject matter of discursive anthropology as a multifold anthropology of those identities that constitute a human being as a discursive living entity – the research of identity in performing arts deals with the dynamism of exchange in the relational space of culture, with a special interest in the processes of individuation during the performing creation process. The research includes performing theory investigation into the links between remembering and representing, “ constructive memory” and the performative use of “ relational memory” . Innovative nature of the interdisciplinary method pertaining to the proposed research assumes groundbreaking importance in the field of performing theory with the feedback in different scientific fields of research such as discursive anthropology, anthropology of individuation, cognitive sociology, phenomenology, cultural history, gender studies, ethnology, cultural anthropology, ethno-theatrology and theories of performance. This type of research explores how discursive field limits and produces identity, but it also examines the interaction between identity and the physical world looking into the process of establishing social, temporal and discursive relational spaces. The author points to the importance of performative spaces determined by gender, sex and body in the context of the theatrical event, the ritual and the fashion. The topic of “ bodies” , “ personae” and “ intersubjects” is viewed as an important subject matter and is been looked upon within the course of the scenic dynamism of interchange conducted in the relational space of culture. According to the author the proposed research should also include other types of relational spaces based on identity that have implication in the performing domain (urban, institutional, colonial, postcolonial, national and transnational spaces of identity constructed under the influence of popular culture, marginal and liminal spaces including the related terms of periphery, border, the Other and the Different).
