Micro-vessels from pseudomorphism after thermal treatment of cation-exchanged zeolites
Thermal treatment of differently exhanged zeolite A precursors is a novel route for the synthesis of aluminosilicate-based ceramic materials. The thermal stability of the zeolite framework and the pathway of its thermal transformation depend considerably on the type(s) of nonframework cations present in the zeolite channel-void system. Thermal treatment of zeolite, both isothermal and nonisothermal, results in its transformation into amorphous aluminosilicate and simultaneous crystallization into a nonzeolitic crystal phase. Despite the structural changes of the original phase, the external shape and the size distribution of the particles of the resulting amorphous aluminosilicate and of the ceramic product, as observed by scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy, remains apparently unchanged. The phenomenon of pseudomorphism is used in order to tailor ceramic micro-vessels for various applications.
