Preventiva orofacijalnih ozljeda štitnikom za zube – sredstvo zaštite na radu u športu

The goal of sports dentistry is to gather epidemiologic data about the prevalence and type of orofacial injuries caused by sporting activities as well as to plan and develop preventive measures. The most important means of orofacial injury prevention is the intraoral, custom-made mouthguard, which successfully prevents injuries of teeth and especially soft tissue injuries of the lips, cheeks and the oral cavity. Since many sporting activities, such as certain groups of contact and extreme sports, demand increased physical effort with the need to breathe through the mouth, it is important to recommend some type of mouthguard for athletes. Namely, easily available finished and semi-finished factory mouthguards have been launched on the market, due to industrial and commercial reasons, and they allow for partial or total avoidance of a dental check up. Given that any procedure in the oral cavity requires a complete adjustment of materials and methods to the patient’ s individual demands, only a custom-made mouthguard can satisfy the most important demands of any athlete: good retention of teeth and ease of oral breathing. The number of professional athletes who wear custom-made mouthguards is still unsatisfactory and their previous experience with ready made or stock mouthguards can create a negative attitude. As a work safety measure in the population of professional athletes, a significantly longer period of training should be considered, during which, as opposed to sporting events, the athlete’ s concentration can be significantly reduced. Naturally, mouthguards are a useful and universal means for the prevention of orofacial injuries in all populations of non-professional, recreational athletes as well as in children’ s games and activities.
