Blastogenic transformation of lymphocytes with phytohemagglutinin in asthmatic children
The aim was to assess nonspecific blastogenic reactivity of the lymphocytes to PHA in asthmatic children and to determine whether this activity can contribute to excessive immune response in allergic asthma. The patients (n=43, 2-15 years of age) were tested while in asymptomatic interval and under no medication or hyposensitization and compared to 31 age and sex matched healthy contrsols. Significantly higher percentage of blasts was found in asthmatics than in controls and this was in positive correlation with the serum IgE level. There was no significant correlation with the duration of the disease.
