Increased phagocytosis and decreased antibody dependent cellular cytotoxicity in normal pregnancy
As changes of phagocyte activities in pregnancy are poorly defined, the aim of study was to test peripheral blood phagocyte functions. The effect of individual pregnancy sera on autologous leucocytes 2-3 months after delivery, as well as the effect of pooled pregnancy sera on leucocytoe from nonpregnant controls were tested. We found a significant increase in the white cell count, particularly neutrophil granulocytes, in pregnant women. There were no differences in leucocyte random mobility and digestion of ingested opsonized sheep red blood cells (SRBC). On the contrary, ingestion of SRBC was increased and ADCC decreased in pregnant women if compared to controls. We were unable to demonstrate any effect of pregnancy serum on phagocytic functions tested.
