Primjena niskoenergetskih lasera u liječenju bolesti oralne sluznice

Rapid development of laser technology enables its greater application in clinical medicine. Lasers are used in dentistry for many years. The use of low level laser (LLL) in the treatment of oral mucosal diseases has proven to be efficient, which resulted in increased number of indications for its use. Due to penetration of laser beams in oral tissues and their biostimulatory effect, the use of LLL as non invasive treatment provides much advantages when compared to standard methods. Anti-infalmmatory, antiflogistic, antimicrobial, miorelaxant and proliferative effect of LLL can be used in treatment of various oral diseases which are manifested with symptoms of inflammation, pain and ulcerations such as recurrent aphthous ulcerations, acute or chronic traumatic ulcerations, oral allergic reactions, oral ulcerations dure to systemic autoimmune diseases and radiation and/or chemotherapy induced mucositis. LLL can also be used in the treatment of oral viral infections such as herpes simplex, varicella zoster and other oral viral infections. Analgesic effect of LLL enables its use in the treatment of various painful conditions in the oral cavity, such as burning mouth syndrome, atypical orofacial pain, trigeminal neuralgia and temporomandibular disorders. Anti-inflammatory and proliferative effect of LLL is used in the treatment of salivary gland hypo function which results in xerostomia. Clinical trials support the use of LLL as a treatment option for various oral diseases and conditions. Those trials point out the need to establish optimal dosage for the treatment of every particular disorder. According to the literature, higher doses are more efficient. Modern scientific trials confirm the effectiveness of LLL therapy with various immunologic, molecular and other methods. Research at our department is focused on use of LLL in treatment of oral ulcerations, salivary gland disorders and burning mouth syndrome. LLL can be used alone or as adjunct for treatment and prevention of various oral diseases.
